Protecting the well-being of the working population is the duty of Government. In pursuant of this and to ensure the safety, well-being and dignity of employees at work, the National Policy on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) was developed. This was also followed by the signing into law of the Employees Compensation Act (ECA), 2010. The ECA assigns the responsibility for the payment of adequate compensation for employees or their dependants for any injury, disease, disability or death arising out of or in the course of employment, prevention of occupational accidents, occupational diseases, workplace disabilities and the enforcement of occupational safety and health standards to the National Social Insurance Trust Fund. To ensure that Civil Servants and the Public Service as a whole access the various bene-fits provided for in the ECA, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation inaugurated the Joint Committee for the Development of a Framework for the Implementation of the OSH Policy and the ECA 2010 in the Federal Civil Service. The implementation of this framework is expected to result in a safe and healthy work environment with a lot of benefits to workers, including enhanced self-esteem at work.
