Welcome to the Maiden Edition of the Service Welfare Newsletter; an initiative of the Service Welfare Office of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. Our new monthly Newsletter is designed for Federal Civil Servants who want to know what the Service Welfare Office is doing about their welfare and benefits; information that rarely makes it to the national dailies and other public media.
The Service Welfare Newsletter is to serve as a platform for the enlightenment of Civil Servants, thereby bridging the communication gap between Government and its Employees. This effort would also serve as a tool to support the effective implementation of Programmes and Initiatives of the Service Welfare Office.
Since the Service Welfare Office was re-established in August 2017, it has commenced the implementation of several programmes targeted at achieving its mandate of promoting safe & convenient work environment, wellbeing, providing basic support for Civil Servants, providing relevant pension information to retired Civil Servants, as well as encourage the continued utilization of their expertise in the Federal Civil Service. Civil and Public Servants are not informed about these programmes in their conception, development, and implementation stages, and may thus be unaware of their existence. This low-level awareness of the activities and achievements of the Office, as well as lack of understanding of the challenges faced in the implementation of various programmes, could largely be attributed to the absence of a medium of communication beyond Service-Wide Circulars.
The publication of the Service Welfare Newsletter, therefore, seeks to promote public understanding of Government’s Welfare Programmes for Federal Civil Servants, through accurate and impartial news, information, perspectives, and analysis. Early awareness of key initiatives and programmes of the Office through awareness raising and education would certainly mobilize support for their implementation. It would also increase stakeholder’s consciousness of the challenges encountered in the implementation of the mandate of the Service Welfare Office with a view to resolving them.
The Service Welfare Newsletter would therefore inform, educate, and motivate Federal Civil Servants across MDAs, by keeping them abreast of various initiatives of Government targeted at improving their welfare and wellbeing. It would provide employees with up-to-date information on their rights and benefits, as well as opportunities to celebrate outstanding employees across MDAs.
This edition has been designed to be exciting, entertaining, informative, and above all educating. Inside you’ll find a mixture of news, features, and regular columns on a wide range of Service Welfare and Benefit issues. We spotlight Training and Capacity Building as a privilege for Officers, provide tips on workplace safety, answer some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and also provide tips on what would enhance Officers health and wellness. We also spotlight Social Diaries and other events across MDAs and a host of others.
The Service Welfare Newsletter is not designed as a collection of media releases. We are prepared to collaborate with you in the task of producing an exciting and informative Newsletter we could all yearn for. Accordingly, we invite you, as Staff of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, to contribute Creative Articles, Cartoons, Tips and Jokes. If there are any issues you would like to read about in the future, please let us know.
Together, we would achieve a focused engagement of key audiences in creating, strengthening, and preserving conditions favourable to the advancement of welfare policies for Federal Government employees.
Enjoy this maiden edition of flight SWN2019.
